The Cuba Arts Initiative was created in 2010 as a result of the frequent inquiries from artists and public for a need to present and discuss the diverse aspects and expressions of Cuban art and culture in a setting such as the one provided by the Cuba Project. This initiative offers seminars and exhibits related to Cuban culture, intellectual history and the arts in collaboration and partneship with other institutions in Cuba and the United States. It includes film series, music, performance art, literature and art exhibitions.
In 2011 the Cuba Project is presenting the well-known Cuban band Grupo Folklorico y Experimental Nuevayorquino in collaboration with Bands of New York, a project that explores the legacy and role of Cuban music in New York communities, engaging artists, specialists, scholars, and local communities in a series of talks, seminars, and musical events.
Geographies of Cuban Art which featured Corina Matamoros, curator of contemporary Cuban art at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana was presented in May 2011 in collaboration with the Rubin Foundation.
A Summer Film Festival showcased three films made in Cuba in 2010 with discussions led by Cuba Fellow and Graduate Center professor Jerry Carlson.
