Cuba Project

The Cuba Arts Ini­tia­tive was cre­ated in 2010 as a result of the fre­quent inquiries from artists and pub­lic for a need to present and dis­cuss the diverse aspects and expres­sions of Cuban art and cul­ture in a set­ting such as the one pro­vided by the Cuba Project. This ini­tia­tive offers sem­i­nars and exhibits related to Cuban cul­ture, intel­lec­tual his­tory and the arts in col­lab­o­ra­tion and part­ne­ship with other insti­tu­tions in Cuba and the United States. It includes film series, music, per­for­mance art, lit­er­a­ture and art exhibitions.

In 2011 the Cuba Project is pre­sent­ing the well-known Cuban band Grupo Folk­lorico y Exper­i­men­tal Nue­vay­orquino in col­lab­o­ra­tion with Bands of New York, a project that explores the legacy and role of Cuban music in New York com­mu­ni­ties, engag­ing artists, spe­cial­ists, schol­ars, and local com­mu­ni­ties in a series of talks, sem­i­nars, and musi­cal events.

Geo­gra­phies of Cuban Art which fea­tured Corina Mata­moros, cura­tor of con­tem­po­rary Cuban art at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana was pre­sented in May 2011 in col­lab­o­ra­tion with the Rubin Foundation.

A Sum­mer Film Fes­ti­val show­cased three films made in Cuba in 2010 with dis­cus­sions led by Cuba Fel­low and Grad­u­ate Cen­ter pro­fes­sor Jerry Carlson.
